An Overview of Dogs' Main Diseases

People often find dogs to be their friends and they are, indeed, very good at friendship, if they are nurtured and trained well. Like humans, animals also face diseases and these could prove to be dangerous, especially when humans get affected by them. The good news, though, is that many of these diseases which spread from dogs can be easily avoided and cured.

The records of diseases which affect dogs keep changing from time to time owing to the rise of new diseases, but there is usually a cure found for them. There are some diseases which attack only dogs, but there are also others which can infect other animals too. There is a variety of dog diseases which are infectious. These include bacterial infections, viral infections, protozoa infections and fungal infections, just to name the most common ones.

Rabies, also referred to as hydrophobia, is one of the better known viral infections. It can be very deadly given the fact that it can affect any living being as well as dogs. This sometimes makes having a closer relation with animals a little dangerous. However, by making frequent visits to the veterinarian you can get your pet vaccinated for rabies, and so prevent it from acquiring this disease.

Another viral disease is the pseudo rabies. It is named this way because its symptoms are similar to those of rabies. Generally this disease affects and is spread by pigs, but when it affects dogs it can be quite dangerous.

Canine parvovirus is another kind of viral infection which can prove very dangerous to the dog's health. However, this disease affects only dogs and primarily puppies. Some of the other viruses which affect dogs include canine herpes virus, canine minute virus and canine corona virus. These can be quite dangerous to puppies, but cause only slighter infections in bigger animals. Still canine hepatitis is one of the deadly viral diseases which can affect the dog's liver.

Now we should look at the bacterial infections in dogs. Brucellosis is an example of a disease which spreads between animals through mating. It can result in abortion and also cause organ infections dangerous to the dogs.

Another disease frequently affecting dogs is canine distemper. It affects the respiratory system on the animal and has diverse symptoms. Another respiratory disease is canine influenza. It is a relatively common one. The disease affects the dog's respiratory system directly and can kill it easily and quickly. The kennel cough is another infection which is very dangerous. It attacks the dog's respiratory system directly.

Like human beings, sometimes dogs have to face the issue of liver and kidney failure when they are infected with Leptospirosis. Similarly, the clostridium can cause diarrhea in dogs and have more negative effect on the gastrointestinal tract.

Ringworm is one kind of fungal infection which commonly affects dogs. It is mainly caused by microsporum canis. When a dog is infected with this it will start losing hair and the skin will be pale. Another fungal infection is the Sporotichosis which is caused by the fungi Sporothrix schenckii. This disease is very harmful to both humans and animals, however it rarely affects dogs. The animals which are most affected by it are cats and horses.

The water moulds of the Pythium species cause Pythiosis, which is another disease that can easily affect dogs and horses. Sometimes even humans can fall prey to this disease. The protozoa disease is caused by coccidiosis infection, which occurs when there are coccidian organisms in the dogs. There is no obvious symptom of this disease and you can only be watchful of the size and weight of your dog to detect it. Generally, you have to monitor your pet's health closely at all times.

Protothecosis is caused by the appearance of green algae. Even parasites like tapeworms and hookworms can cause various diseases in dogs. The symptoms would be loss of weight, diarrhea and vomiting. Even fleas, heartworm, roundworms, ticks and mites can cause diseases in dogs.
